I think most folks know that home owners insurance cover very little if any of the firearms in your home if they are stolen.

I'm wondering what people pay for the "extra coverage" for the rider on their insurance?

Would a person cover the "replacement" value or the actual cost?

Another little thing that folks know is a $35 a year membership to the NRA gives you $1000 worth of firearms coverage. How do I know this, my dads home was robbed and he lost all of his guns. He lost his bigtime, but still the extra $$$ from the NRA helped a little.

Typical coverage on most homeowners policies is $2500 for guns. However, this coverage is subject to the policy deductible...which is usually high if it is not, it should be!

As Brian said, if you put a rider or "schedule" your guns on your policy you can chose the deductible per item and put an amount of coverage on the item you will be happy with in the event they are stolen.

One thing to remember is usually this special limitation is for theft only. If you have a fire, tornado etc, they are usually covered. Policy language varies from company to company but you may want to ask if you are concerned about coverage.

Scott, as a State Farm agent, I know you can't speak for all companies, but what does the cost run for each $1,000. worth of "rider".

Are you saying that my home owners insurance will cover more $$ if it's a fire ect? 'spose if your house is totally gone it covers up to the policy limits that I would have.

One last question...I know you want to go fishing!

I have my cars, boat and home owners insurance through State Farm. I receive a discount for multipule cars, accendent free ect. Would I qualify for a discounted firearms "rider"?

First, I am not a State Farm agent , I have an Independent Agency, we represent many companies.

Yes, usually "specific limitations" apply to items such as Guns, Jewelry, Antiques & Collectibles, Art, Silverware, etc. for Theft/Mysterious Dissapearence. Usually this is not the case with other perils such as wind, fire etc. Most companies are concerned about theft because fraud happens and saying your $10,000 worth of guns got stolen is pretty easy.

As for a auto/home discount etc. Items that are scheduled on a homeowners policy are subject to the same discounts you get on your homeowners. Most companies don't usually give discounts on specific items that are scheduled on the policy. Hopefully that makes sense.

Yes, I recommend scheduling any items of value, usually it is pretty cheap depending on the item and you can get a smaller deductible. $1 per $100 is a very common price for scheduling items.

Ok, since you're and American Family agent....

Sorry, don't know why I thought that!

How about in my truck. If a $800. hand gun was taken from my truck, my homeowners policy would cover it up to the set amount listed in my policy... (I know, who would leave firearms in a car?)

It all depends. Did you have a gun in your shack?
