One of the noise shy dogs I am working with is making great progress! Remember, I started off with .22 blanks and a steady dog. Fired the pistol in my pocket while the dogs were off busy in the weeds. If the dog looked back at me, I continued walking as nothing happened and did not make eye contact with him. Next, since he loves water retrieves- I would fire in my pocket again when he was out on a retrieve. Did this next with the gun out of pocket. Things went well so today we moved to the field. I would toss a bird and had a helper fire a .410 on my cue. Started about 100 yds. from the gun and walked it in to about 10 yds. Dog never flinched!. A few more rounds with the .410 and it will be time for the 12 gauge. Couldn't be happier with todays results .

i had a dog around 8 yrs ago that was so gun shy it wasn't even funny. i ended up putting him on a leash while roofing a couple of houses w/ the air guns. he eventually could handle a .22 but, the shotgun thing never developed. Now, he lives w/ a family that doesn't hunt on the Mississippi and swims all summer long. It's good to hear that you are taking the time to develop the dog to make it work. Congrats

Don you have your work cut out for ya. I've gotten them to handle some shots but when hunting with others and 4 to 5 guns go off the dog goes a running. Some are meant to hunt while others aren't. Good luck to ya

Yep, just happy with the way things have gone so far. The key thing is the birdyness. He loves birds and retrieving so having fun takes over the gunshy issue. I won't have him a situation where there are more than two guns at a time. Thanks though, you brought up a good point.

Moved up to having someone toss a bird a fire a 12 gauge. Glad to report, no problems. A couple of sessions and now when a gun fires he is looking for somethung to fall.
