#602843 - 08/20/08 08:38 PM

Ok so I bought my first trail camera and have been haveing a lot of fun with it BUT now I got a pic of a big deer (in my book) and don't want to wreak anything by spooking him but would love to pattern him if at all possible.

I have been stoping out to my hunting land once a week, being very carfull as to pay attention to wind and so on when I go in and swap SD cards but. Can doing that raise to much heck with suff or should I just keep doing what I have been doin?????
here is a pic of him
and on a side noet I was raised a meat hunter and am turning into a trophy hunter but do not have the knowledge

I think you better give me the GPS coordinates of your camera and I'll let you know when I have him patterned for you.

Dandy buck.

Yes tough question for sure but the best thing to do is play it safe and stay out. IMO The camera has done it's work so place it some other place, maybe another property. If there is feed in this area the bucks in the first two weeks will be hitting it early and that's a good ambush area being deep woods offer limited visibility this time of year. If it's possible to glass from a distance that's the way to go. I feel the first two weeks then the pre rut, rut and post rut is the best chance of capitalizing on a buck like that. Great buck btw!

Always spray your boots with coon urin, every timber has coons in it. You can leave your camera there but don't make too many trips to check the card, buy one with some memory. After you get the pictures you want put it 100 to 200 yrds away on eighter side. Look for trails that lead to this area and set it off the trail 15 to 20 yrds. If you find a scrape when they start making them set aways away so it dosen't spook them. Don't get right on top of them wanting to get thier pictures. Don't tell anybody that might be a meat hunter unless thier changeing too, keep that spot for yourself. Good luck

What I do is buy a bigger SD card and only check my cameras when I have to. I leave them out for at least 2 weeks normally in between checking. Depending on deer traffic in the area you may be able to go longer. I have 2 cameras I will have out for over a month and may not check until opening day. The more you can stay out of that area, the less chance of spooking him.

CT, also has a good idea. You know he's there, perhaps back out and not go to that area unless you are hunting? I guess for me it would depend on where the camera is located and ease of entry/exit for me.

I agree with CT and Rob you know he is there so back out don't go back untill you are ready to hunt. I would put your camera in a different spot and check out some new areas.

exactly what Coppertop said, "move the camera" you have a pic of the buck in one spot. figure out where he is coming and going. use the camera to help put your stand in the right location. good luck and let the chess game begin

I think i would go in ounce more and put a bigger card in and not go back until you were going to hunt, then check it. That is providing that you have a stand there already or whatever set up that you hunt from. Also I would try to have a very good idea of what the does around there are doing ,come the rut he will find them ,That is one of the only things about big bucks that is a sure thing.

your best chance of seeing him is early season. Come the rut, who knows where he will go I use a 1GB memory card on all my trail cameras so that i have enough memory to get by for about 3 weeks. Just like that one oven commercial says, "Set it and forget it" Wait till opening day to check the camera again. He might go nocturnal once that velvet comes off so if you have any food sources close by, hunt transition areas if he might be going there just before dark
