hey there guys, just found this forum and thought it had a lot of good info, i'm a newbie duck hunter this will be my 2nd season, i live in corpus christi tx and the ducks are everywhere here but all seem to be in the saltwater i have a 1953 evinrude outboard that i'm very reluctant to take in salt water, any opinions about that? or anyone from this area looking for a partner? i'm basically on my own to learn a new area (just moved here from michigan) and could really benefit a lot from some experience. thanks ahead of time

Hey Chopper welcome to the site. You can use the motor in salt water just run it in a garbage can with fresh water for a few minutes to flush it out when you get home. I know during winter theres tons of geese that migrate down your way.

I would check with a marine dealer in your area on the saltwater thing to be on the safe side.

Its ok to do it that way Steve. When we moved to Texas along the gulf coast a marina told me to use eigther muffs or a tank with fresh water in it. It dosen't take alot to rinse one out. Start it and let it run a minute without a thermostat, five minutes with one is what they said.

how long have you been doing this for? do the motors still suffer from it, my real dilema is that this motor has been in my wifes family since it was new in 1953 and would hate to be the one to ruin it considering it still runs like a champ today.

I don't know if theres technical things to know like what happens after doing this for 5 years or so. A guy I knew worked on motors and he said that all you have to do is rinse them out everytime or the salts hard on the aluminum. It dosen't take much for the salt to start etching the metal and pitting to occure shortly after. I never had anything go wrong with my motor because I rinsed the outside and ran it in a garbage can. I pulled the can over to my boat while it was on the trailer and filled it up then ran the motor and rinsed the top. I do know that you have to change the water in the can fairly regularily and keep it clean. Salts hard on aluminum.
