how often do you check the wind while hunting and what do you do if it switchs right at primetime? i carry a puff bottle and check it about every 15 minutes if it gets bad i check it every 5 minutes then if its bad for 15 minutes i get down and sneek out last night it switched about 630 earlier than expected so i was getting ready to bail and see a buck coming then 5 minutes later another buck 2 6-points they ate and sparred 25 yards from me dead downwind and never winded me got lucky i think with the sparring and then the yotes came out they had enuff to deal with

i don't think i have had the wind switch on me yet this year...I always check the weather before i go to see what the wind is like. I got away with a bad wind last weekend. The does were about 80 yards out on the field eating and directly downwind of me and didn't spook. I think spraying down before the hunt lets you get away w/ certain situations like that

From what I've seen the wind plays a bigger role when the deer are close, 40 yrds and under. I think the wind break upa guys scent some the farther it gets out, it dosen't mean they won't smell a guy though. Cool air droping and going down hill or a draw when theres no wind will do the same thing. I seen a doe bedded down 200 yrds downhill one time and I stood there for a couple minutes and watched her to see of my scent was going down hill and was going to reach her. When it reached her she got up on all fours, turned around and looked straight up hill to exactly where I was standing and ran, she didn't even look around for a direction to find where the scent was coming from. It was like she knew those down drafts were going to go right to her bedding spot so thats why she chose that spot. I know bucks do this and will lay up and look one direction and wait for the downdrafts to tell him if anythings coming from another direction he can't see.
