Alright guys let's hear how your weekend was?
I had high hopes of getting out this weekend however with an 8 month old who is teething and has a cold at the same time I couldn't bring my self to get out of bed yesterday after a sleepless night. So I have to live through the stories from you guys this week.
So how was it?

In the Albany and Upsala area I would have to say the opener was poor. Saturday was bluebird skies and Sunday was wet skies.
We ended up with a paltry 3 Mallards in the bag. We did allow quite a few birds to come in and leave the decoys unscathed, however.
I spoke to some store owners in Grey Eagle on Sunday who gave the same overall result of fair to poor for that area as well.

I hunted south of St. Cloud with my brother and two friends on Saturday and it was one of the slowest openers that we have had in long while ? We shot 2 drake mallards all morning. One of the mallards was about 85% fully colored with 3 curls and red legs , while the other was trying to camo himself as a hen . Both birds worked well to the calls and came from the only area that they could and not be shot at on their approach. We had WAY to much competetion on the lake we hunted. We saw quite a few ducks before 9:00 as well as a TON of geese, but the were nowhere to be seen after the season opened. On Sunday I went out by myself and took out my 11 year old chocolate lab, Loomis. We went to a lake that we normallly do well on teal and woodducks, but we hunted til 10:00 and only had 2 woodducks and 3 geese decoy all morning. The woodducks were in the first 5 minutes and both of them landed within 10 yards of the blind and almost hit me when I jumped them to shoot, as their escape was to fly right over my head and came within a couple of feet. The dog and I sat til almost 10:00 and the only thing that saved the hunt was 3 honkers that decoyed as I was unloading the gun. I had just taken both shells out of my Citori and I look up to see 3 geese flying my way. I throw the shells back in and give one honk on the goose call and they lock up and come right in. I hit the goose in the butt with the first shot and miss with the second, but he keeps on flying only to turn and come back around as he was hurting. I grabbed another shell in time to finish the bird and the rest was up to Loomis. She has retrieved alot of birds over the last 11 years , but her left hip is bad and she can't do what she used to . She made a nice retrieve and we headed out to pick up decoys. I saw only 15 ducks all morning and around 50 geese. The only good thing is that season is on and it can only get better . I hope the rest of you had safe and enjoyable hunts . I can not wait til next weekend to try again . 690reece

I did not go, but I heard quite a bit of shooting, just south of the cabin... that would be the eastside of Mille Lacs, east of Hunters Point... I would guess people sitting on Petersons Creek.

Average for us. Woodies and teal were abundant Saturday. 5 of us got our wood ducks and 7-8 teal. Sunday was wet! Quick action for the first 1/2 or so, then completely dead. Think we ended up with 10 birds or so, with some poor shooting.
Took yesterday off because I'm usually able to find some local mallards that were moved around opening weekend....unfortunately, there just weren't any this year. Settled for a pot hole with 150 woodies using it.....banged my 3 nice drakes quickly....and spent the rest of the day fishin.

Bird numbers seem way down at this point.....not expecting much for the next couple weeks. Wish the water would come up about 5 feet!

I did not make it out Saturday but hunted in the rain Sunday morning with my son. I shot 3 woodies except one floated into the open water and while I was waiting to retrieve it an eagle snatched it up! My son said it was really cool and he wished he had a video camera. I was not so impressed at first but it was cool to see. I told him this is why we use steel shot... Ended the wet morning with 2 woodies. Then I got home to see the dog ripped up my yard, I guess he was pissed that I did not take him along

I second that. But we were able to get into a few Mallards on Sunday.
I only have a few minutes today. I'll try to get on tommorow or friday with a full update. We did a bunch of scouting between Stcloud and Ottertail.
Have a great week boys.

I left my dog at home because he is a little high strung and with my son in the boat I wanted to be able to concentrate on him and not the dog. The dog is not what I would call fully trained and while he is a decent pheasant dog he has just never calmed down even at 4 years old. I also ended up hunting somewhere I had not planned to be since we got going a little late and someone was already in my first choice spot.

Just curious? How many wood ducks can you shoot per person in MN? I thought it ws two but it may have changed unknowingly to me. Thanks for your help in advance. Chris

North Dakota was very good! We did not shoot the ducks in the fields as planned but ended up shooting a lot of mallards and Pintails. 2nd day was a limit of 12 Drake mallards and 3 drake Pintails. Far as I am concerned that is the perfect limit. Thanks Chris

MN allows 2 woodies per person per day. I believe WI allows 3 woodies per person per day.
