We were thinking mink too, but this was over a mile away from any type of water, marsh etc. Which made us think weasel.

It's a weasel. Mink to not have the black tips on their tail.

Just saw one last weekend already in ermine. I used to get them in mink traps. I even got one in one of those live mouse traps in the grainery one time...UNREAL smell!!!
One time in high school a buddy of mine gutted one out and shoved a toilet paper roll up it's and sewed it back together until it dried. He would put it in girls lockers tied to a string so when they would open the door it would "Jump" out at them.

Ahhhh, the good old days.

Mink are dark brown, almost black.

From the Web:
Weasel, a small, aggressive, fur-bearing animal found in many parts of the Northern Hemisphere. It is related to the mink and ferret. The weasel has a small, flat, triangular head with short, rounded ears. It has short legs and a long, slender neck. Weasels range in length from 6 to 24 inches (15 to 60 cm), including the tail. The animal has a strong musky odor. The fur is brown above and white or yellowish below. In cold regions, the fur turns white in winter, though in some species the tip of the tail remains dark. A white weasel is sometimes called an ermine.

Mink actually are MANY colors. In high school, I used to help out at a mink farm. They would occasionally escape, and they do breed in the wild. BTW a mink is in the weasel family... so definitely a weasel

I trapped a blond mink back in the 70's, so yes, they do come in shades. But most are dark, and those are the ones worth the $ as they are easier to match for coats and stoles. Weasels black tips on the tails are the dead giveaway.

Agreed, it is in the weasel family. Actually, they got more for the white or off colored pelts, the rarer, the more $$$$, the dark chocolate brown were as they would say, a dime a dozen

Well we probably got took then. We were 14 year old kids who would meet the fur buyer at the hotel when he would come into town. We used to think the guy was so cool, 'cause he new "Everything!" He was probably ripping us off.
At first I thought it may be a green sunfish.

A weasel for sure. The tail like was said is a ded give away. Mink are normally a solid color, and like said will come in all sorts of colors. As a kid I worked on a mink farm. Now that was a stinky job.

That had to be bad! I used to hate skinning them! Quite a unique musky smell. They are fun to watch though! Weasels too! I have spent many a deer hunting day watching them hunt mice from my stand.

I don't know what was worse, the smell of the Mink or the food we had to prep, and then drive down the rows, plopping it on top of the cages... That stuff wreaked like
