I don't rifle hunt yet, so I have been spending a lot of time the last several days driving several roads around some of the public land I hunt. It blows me away how many guys you see driving around wearing orange during prime times in the early morning and late evening when they should ideally be in the woods. I can only assume some of these guys are road hunting. I've been having fun following them and turning around when they pull off to the side of the road. They seem to get a little nervous and move on. On Sunday evening I pulled up behind a guy that had his rifle out the window and he had his 2 boys in the truck with him. It was all I could do not to lay into him. Anyway he got nervous and tossed the gun in the back seat and moved on. That guy really scared me because I know a couple of guys that hunt out of ground blinds in that section. I talked to the area Game Warden and he thanked me for driving around. He said it can really help keep these guys honost.
Anyway our deer movement has been hit of miss the last several days. You either see a ton of deer moving or none at all. I think the full moon has had them bedding down earlier than normal in the mornings. This morning was finally a little different. I was out driving for 30 minutes right at sunrise and saw 13 deer on the move and one of them was the shooter buck I have been seeing on public land a couple of miles from my house. I sure hope he can make it through the weekend. I can get back out with my bow on Monday.

Man that is sad... i'm a grouse hunter and you see this ALOT in northern WI. Sure makes the hard-working hunter frustrated. I'd much rather see someone baiting illegally and sitting over it instead of shooting game off the road.

I grew up where road hunting pheasants was legal, so for me it's not a big deal for birds. However, when it comes to big game, I just don't get it. Rushed shots, hurry on land you likely don't have permission(if you even kill the deer), then throw the animal in the truck and race off. What a story to tell your grand children in 40 years.

I have a lot of great memories with my parents when I was a kid road hunting for grouse. They use to take us out of school on some Fridays to go hunting. Some of the best times I can remember as a kid! With that said, big game is a different story...especially with a gun. You have no idea who might be just inside the woods if you're just driving around shooting at deer.

I have never understood road hunters. It is simply not any fun for me to sit in a truck all day and look at the ditches.
I much prefer to watch the dog work a wiley rooster, or feel the chill in the air right before the sun comes up on a cool morning in the deer stand. That to me is what it is about.
We can talk and BS all night long after the sunlight has faded from the swamp, but while the sun shines, get out there and hunt

Remember that we are just 1-2 generations from a time when this was considered ok. My dad tells stories of this type of hunting when he grew up. Guys in the back of pickup trucks driving around looking for deer.
In rural areas, such as N. ND where I'm from, you see too much of this because enforcement just isn't possible.

I guess I don't see how road-hunting one man's prized game is more excusable then another man's... but none-the-less road hunting is not cool.

Road hunting for grouse IS legal in Wisconsin and if done legally and ethically then it can be cool! I enjoy walking for grouse just as much as I enjoy hunting them while I'm road hunting. It's the way I was brought up 35 years ago and I enjoy sharing that with my family. I guess I will not apologize for it...it's just another way of spending time with my family!

As Kooty stated, it is legal to road hunt pheasants in South Dakota and it is a good time to relax after walking most of the day. Most of the time, you just BS about the past and present hunts and don't even bother to look. I also believe it is legal to shoot out the windows in South Dakota with shotguns and high powered rifles if you are shooting at Coyotes or Fox.
It is IL-legal to for someone to drive around and harrass the road hunters and purposely keep them from "Scoring" by pushing the birds away from the roads.
Now deer, that is not allowed.

Bickering. Most of us here in Illinois and Iowa believe it is unsporting and unethical to hunt over bait. Lots of opinions about lots of things. I agree that a few slobs do ruin a lot of things for a lot of people.

this is a very interesting topic, I know that you guys dislike the idea of just driving around looking for a deer. but what if you were driving around, gun in the trunk, unloaded and you come up on a deer in hunting land. he is not in front of you but you still see him. would you run out there and grab your gun or would you just pass? my take on this is that as long as you dont shoot it while driving or from inside your car its ok. that is because you are in hunting areas. were do you draw the line on how far you have to be from your car to say you can shoot a deer.
