I was told by the Vet the otherday as I was getting Cooper his shots that the deer Ticks are extreamly heavy this year so get them covered with Frontline or whatever so they don't get Lymes disease.

It seemed like during the summer they were not too bad. I did not find any on the dogs for quite some time. But lately it has been another story. They are quite bad now.

I hunted around Hill city area last saturday and the deer ticks and wood ticks were horible. At least 4 ticks on us after every trail we walked. Picked at least that many off the dogs too. Good thing I had put frontline on the dog the week prior.

The ticks were real bad around here through july.Then nothing much until september. Then the deer ticks got real bad. One of my dogs came down with Anaplasmosis & Lymes. This is after the lymes shot, bio spot, and spraying the yard with ortho bug be gone max. Still it only takes one.
On a side note. The dog that got infected was just a year old. First year for the vax. Vet said the first year there is a 50/50 chance with it. After that very effective. Lucily we caught it very early. In 48hours had a whole differnt dog back. No she is up again and playing like a pup

Grouse hunted the Finlayson area around the cabin several weekends ago with my lab. I found several ticks but nothing unusual. Had treated the dog with Protocal, along with the Lyme vaccination. While up at the cabin this past weekend, my lab woke up Sunday morning very lethargic and having a significant limp in the front right leg. She was acting very strange for a 2 year old pup. Long story short, she was diagnosed with Anaplasmosis (Dog Fever). This is a tick born illness that causes lethargy, joint pain and high fever. My lab had a 105.5 degree temp on Sunday evening, when normal is approx 101. I hope she returns to normal before the South Dakota pheasant opener. Hopefully the doxycyline will do its job.

What are some of the symptoms of Lymes and some of the others deseases?

Fever, lethargy, sudden arthritis symptoms, vomiting, general nausea, dog not being itself. Do a google search on canine Lymes disease, you will find a ton of information. After about 22 hours on the Doxycycline, my lab has already showed much improvement.

We were up last weekend near Bigfork and we pulled about 40 Deer ticks off the dog and about 5-6 off of each of us. That was with the dog treated. All but 3 were un-attached.

Grouse- your dog should be fine! The only thing that scares me about Anna is it may come back. Some vets say it will, some say it can be cured completely. No one knows for sure. I do know that a firend's dog had it come back. Still that dog had it come back jsut after the first course of meds. To be honest not even sure if it got a whole months worth of treament or not.
I can tell you my dog is doing great after 2 weeks now. Starting to put some weight back on, and wrestling with the other dogs.

Just an update on our dog. She is doing great and there is no sign of either disease right now. What stinks, is we have no way to test for it right now. They will test positive for up to 6 months after according to the vet. Just have to wait and see for any symptoms to come back. Hopefully the Lymes won't mutate into a auto immune disese which is common.

I have pulled 4 attached deer ticks off my dog this fall. the one in the middle of the back almost right where I pt the frontline was dead. The other 3 were alive and full of blood.
I don't know if I had a bad batch of Frontline or what but it sure didn't seem to do squat this fall!
