Winter Archery Leagues
#645447 - 12/29/09 09:42 PM

With the new year almost upon us, winter archery leagues are sure to be starting up. I've never shot league, and am looking forward to possibly trying it out this year. Anybody with more experience at this? What ranges have you tried?

I know I need to get back to Schaffers just to have them do a once-over on my Reezen 6.5. During a season full of neglect and abuse, and being under the gun enough during spring turkey season, I want to make sure I'd be ready for both league and spring birds.

Whether you bought your bow there or not, my experience has been that they'll look the thing over for bumps and bruises that non-bow-nerds like myself wouldn't pick up on. It's saved me on more than one occasion, with a replaced string and rest adjustment being necessary. Drawing on a big gobbler is NOT when I want to find out I've got a problem.

The archery shop here in Fairmont(Cardinal Outdoors) hosted a 5 spot,300 pt, and video leagues. They were allways a fun way to shorten the winter. The video league really sharpened my eye for shot placement in hunting situations. I recomend leagues too all archers.

I have shot in the one at the Cannon Sportsmens club but haven't now for the last couple years but was thinking about it again. Let me know if you are looking for a teammate. Last time it was 4 man teams that shoot either on Mondays or Wed. Paper animal targets set at 20 yards with trees set out front to make for some challenging shots. It was a lot of fun. There were some guys that took it a bit to serious, in my opinion, and had target bows set up and were dissappointed if they didn't shoot perfect scores. I used it as a great practice tool and had fun with it!
Always fun to talk hunting and have a few after!

Big-hunter - to my knowledge, it's a free checkup. They'll look at it, tell you what needs to be done, and fix the problem while you wait. Obviously the fix costs money, but it's a nice insurance policy, esp. if you're not sure. I trust those guys too, they won't sell you on something you don't need, or fix something that doesn't need it. It gets busy in there, so if you can go in during some off-peak hours, the wait will be even shorter.

Scott - You're in the same boat I'm in then! I'm no crack shot but like to shoot. The uber-serious target shoots aren't what I'm looking for, but I'm sure it's all in what you make of it.

Let's talk on that, maybe I'll try to figure out when it starts up.

Winter archery leagues can be a blast as well as hitting as few of the local 3D shoots, as stated it’s what you yourself make of it, sometimes having a few sharp shooters around can be a big plus – for the most part 90% of these folks are more then happy to take the time to answer your questions and are more of a benefit to the shooter versus being intimidating.

This is a perfect opportunity to get some repetitive practice in place and see what flaws tend to surface in time and then work at correcting them.
